Ravens Honor Casey Cares Volunteer with Community Quarterback Award
Wednesday, November 18, 2009
After receiving a record number of nominations for the 2009 Community Quarterback Award, the Baltimore Ravens selected three deserving Maryland volunteers for recognition, one of whom is Debi Katzenberger from the Casey Cares Foundation. The award, funded by NFL Charities and the Ravens All Community Team Foundation (RACTF), celebrates outstanding volunteers who demonstrate leadership, dedication and a commitment to bettering Maryland communities.
The Ravens will host these three additional "quarterbacks" when Baltimore takes on the Indianapolis Colts on Nov. 22, with all of this year's honorees being recognized in a pre-game ceremony at M&T Bank Stadium. Each individual will receive tickets for themselves and a guest, as well as Ravens gifts and a $2,000 grant for their respective non-profit organization.
The 2009 Community Quarterback Debi Katzenberger and her accomplishments are listed below:
"Pajama Parties with a Purpose"
Debi Katzenberger, Casey Cares Foundation
Debi Katzenberger knows how uncomfortable a hospital can be for a child; she saw it first hand while her granddaughter Kamryn fought leukemia. After Kamryn passed away, Debi wanted to spread a little bit of comfort to pediatric patients on extended hospital stays. Knowing that Kamryn always felt better when she replaced her scratchy hospital gown with a new pair of pajamas, Debi created "Kami's Jammies." Debi has organized p.j. drives, created care packages and fostered the growth of this program for the Casey Cares Foundation. Thanks to her tireless efforts, more than 1,500 children have been recipients of "Kami's Jammies."

A great big thank you to individuals that support Casey Cares programs along with North Run Farm, Matt Stover, Batman, Owens & Minor and The Wiessner Foundation for a great party this past Sunday. Kids were treated to crafts, pumpkin picking, hayriding and a corn maze as well as a visit from Baltimore Raven Matt Stover and Batman! These parties would not be possible without the generosity of all our donors, so thank you for caring about Casey Cares!
Company and Individual Support Matters This Holiday Season

The holidays are a particularly stressful time for families who have critically ill children. With their primary focus being hospital treatments and medical bills, little time is spent on laughter, enjoyment and holiday spirit. Casey Cares' Holiday Giving Program encourages companies and their employees to combine individual donations to make a huge difference in the lives of our Casey Cares families when they need it most.
The uplifting programs with a special touch we provide for critically ill children and their families are only possible with the generosity of the community. Last month, five year old Matthew, currently on treatment for leukemia at Johns Hopkins Hospital, visited Hershey Park as part of our Family Festivities Program. When a child like Matthew is diagnosed with a life threatening illness, family life is turned upside-down.
After the trip Matthew's mom wrote, "Our family had a great time. We have completed 30 months of chemotherapy treatment for Matthew ... these little treats help us enjoy some family fun time. Your organization is wonderful..." Your donation makes "family fun time" a reality. A night at a sporting event, tickets to a concert, or a movie and pizza night at home, Casey Cares programs provide much needed relief from their arduous lives.
This year we challenge you to make the holidays brighter for hundreds of local families in need. Please sponsor one of our special programs described in the materials. Your organization will receive recognition in our monthly e-newsletter and quarterly newsletter, a company logo and link on our website, and a commemorative plaque to honor your contribution. Your support means the world to the Casey Cares Foundation, and more importantly, to the critically ill children and families we serve each year.
You will make a difference in the life of a child and positively affect your own life as well.

In a cooperative effort between Donation Line and the Casey Cares Foundation, your used vehicle (car, truck, van, boat, motorcycle, jet skis, snowmobiles, RVs and even airplanes) will be worth a fortune to a charity that serves children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. When You Want To Send The Very Best...
Thursday, August 27, 2009
The Casey Cares Foundation is proud to announce a new partnership with Cards for Causes, a card company which donates 20% of the cost of their greeting cards to the business' charity of choice. Appealing to companies who normally order holiday and other greeting cards, business owners can now easily order them knowing that part of their cost will benefit programs for children with life threatening illnesses. Just go to: http://www.cardsforcauses.com/, click "Select a Cause" and under Health, choose: Casey Cares Foundation.
"Cards for Causes is pleased that the Casey Cards Foundation has been added to our database of eligible charities to receive donations from us", stated Mike Rabidoux - President & Owner of Cards for Causes, "We hope to send ever increasing donations to them as a result of sales from our customers to assist them in furthering their mission to provide services to families with critically ill children."
In time for ordering for the holidays, companies can let their associates, clients and employees know they care by sending one of their personalized business Christmas cards or business holiday cards and imprint their company logo or add personal signatures. Casey Cares Provides Comfort Bags to Newly Diagnosed Patients
Wednesday, August 26, 2009
Thanks in part to a grant from The Rouben & Violet Jiji Foundation, we have been able to purchase canvass tote bags that will be given out by social workers at local hospitals to newly diagnosed patients.
The feedback from social workers and hospital staff has revealed a need for a receptacle for patients to store information they receive upon hospital registration. When patients are first admitted into the hospital, after being diagnosed with a life-threatening disease, they are bombarded with information. Pamphlets about drugs and their side effects, directories of the hospital, glossaries filled with medical jargon, brochures explaining their child's diagnosis, family support groups, financial assistance applications, and so forth. Several social workers have requested tote bags for patients to store this information.
We are so excited to be able to fill this need! We will be putting an application for our programs as well as other items like playing cards, puzzle books, reusable water bottles and journals in the bags for the families. We would like to also be able to include some medical items like thermometers, hand sanitizer, etc.
That is where you come in!
We need your help securing items to be put in the bags! Items such as:
Playing cards
Reusable water bottles
Journals
Disposable cameras
Hand sanitizer

A Fashion Dream Comes True
Thursday, August 6, 2009
Opening the Grand Finale runway of Baltimore Fashion Week will be 15 children modeling one-of-a-kind pajamas created by fashion designer Jennifer Carlino. The young models will depict the waking up from a dream to find out it has come true. Three of those children are enrolled in the Casey Cares Foundation and battling life threatening diseases, including Josh Carlino, the designer's five year old son. Ms. Carlino produced this collection especially for the Kami's Jammies Program, one of six programs of the Casey Cares Foundation which provides uplifting programs for critically ill children and their families. Named in memory of a Casey Cares child, Kami's Jammies provides new sleepwear and themed pajama parties to pediatric hospital patients.
Ms. Carlino is the owner of a local loungewear company called Sheetpants, Inc.
"I am the mother of an amazing five year old boy diagnosed recently with Stage III Wilms Tumor," stated Ms. Carlino, "Throughout these difficult times my family has been overwhelmed by the kindness, support and generosity of organizations like Casey Cares. I am honored, humbled and grateful to be chosen to design pajamas that would make these families days and nights a little brighter..."

Pirates and Sailing for Casey Cares Kids
Monday, August 3, 2009
A great big thank you to Urban Pirates and The Downtown Sailing Center for a great party for 100 Casey Cares kids and family members. For the third year in a row, our families had a blast on the Harbor, cruising around hunting for buried treasures with the little ones and learning how to sail for the older kids. The perfect morning for our families. Caring Connection Parties like this are made possible by generous donors like The Downtown Sailing Center and Urban Pirates along with a grant from The Wiessner Foundation for Children.
Our Caring Connection Group Parties were developed based on feedback we received from social workers about the needs of families coping with the diagnosis and treatment of life threatening illnesses. They suggested adding group events to give families much needed time to meet each other, share experiences, learn from each other and develop support systems. We instituted our Caring Connection Group Party Program to do just that in a safe and fun environment.

Dentist Donates Time Whitening Smiles Year Round

Program Benefits Critically Ill Children from the Casey Cares Foundation and Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids Foundation
During a national "Smiles for Life" campaign, Dr. Craig Longenecker, a dentist practicing in the Monkton, MD area for the past 11 years, is donating his time and material and is professionally whitening a patient's teeth for less than his normal cost. After the appointment, you make your check out to: "Smiles for Life", and your entire cost will be donated to two children's charities. Half will go to the Casey Cares Foundation, a Maryland-based charity that provides uplifting programs with a special touch for critically ill children and their families, and the other half will go to national children's charities through the Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids Foundation.
This is the fourth year that Dr. Longenecker has participated in this program and selected the Casey Cares Foundation to receive half of what he raises. For an appointment to get your teeth whitened, please call 1-410-357-0099.
"Two years ago my wife and I witnessed first hand the affect that this money has on children. The amount of strength these kids have is admirable, but inside they are still just children - and they are sick year round," explained Dr. Longenecker. "Because of that we've decided to continue the campaign year round. So now you don't have to wait for the campaign to start, or rush to get in before it ends...it's always on in our office."
This is part of an annual campaign organized by the Crown Council, an association of elite dentists throughout North America of which Dr. Longenecker is a member. Their charity organization has raised more than $20 million since it was organized in 1998.

Casey Cares Teams With CaringBridge
Tuesday, April 28, 2009
As an added service to our families, Casey Cares has entered a partnership with CaringBridge to offer free personalized websites that allow people to stay in touch with family and friends when someone is facing a serious medical condition, treatment and recovery. The goal of the service is to ease the burden of keeping friends and family updated, while also providing a way for them to send their love, support and encouragement. Family and friends visit the site to read updates and leave messages of support in the guestbook. To learn more about CaringBridge click here or to create your own CaringBridge site click here.
Families unprepared for a loved one's health diagnosis can be overwhelmed by medical terminology, treatment decisions and hospital visits. It's times like these that families need support from extended family and friends. But even trying to respond (much less reach out) to them using the phone or personal e-mails is overwhelming and exhausting. CaringBridge was created to help these families receive support and provide information, while increasing time available for the patient and their caregiver. CaringBridge sites can be an important tool for families dealing with the stress of a health situation, giving them an appropriate outlet for sharing their feelings and receiving support.
CaringBridge provides free personal and private Web sites to patients and families when someone is facing a health crisis. A CaringBridge Web site allows the family to update everyone concerned with just one Web site entry, rather than making and taking countless phone calls to/from well-wishers. In return, patients and their family can hear from hundreds of their loved ones offering support and encouragement, and store all of those messages in one spot. Many say that while cards and letters are wonderful, they can't come close to the volume of well-wishes and compassion they receive through their CaringBridge experience.
In 1997, CaringBridge founder Sona Mehring's close friend suffered a life-threatening pregnancy. To keep family and friends informed about the critical situation, Mehring created a Web site to communicate information to a wide circle of people without disturbing the mother's need for rest or placing additional demands on hospital staff. From that simple beginning, CaringBridge has grown to host more than 140,000 personal Web sites.

Saturday, March 28, 2009
Over 250 masked guests filled the Grand Lodge, Bonnie Blink in Hunt Valley on Saturday March 28, 2009, for the Casey Cares Foundation's Masquerade Gala. Lovecraft's jazz filled the hall during cocktail hour as guests mingled with the duo of Batman and Robin, Miss Maryland USA Gabrielle Carlson, and Miss Teen Maryland Kasey Staniszewski. Guests had their faces painted by Laural Hargadon Make-up Artistry, portraits taken by J.Thomas Photography and attempted to win one of the half carat diamonds generously donated by Nelson Coleman Jewelers.

After dinner, Casey Baynes, and Gala Chair, Marcus Aiello presented the three 2009 Champion of Children awards. Most Valuable Kids and their founders Beth and Daryle Bobb received the award for consistently donating hard to get tickets like Ravens, Redskins, and Capitals games to our families. Just last week, they gave us four floor seats to a Wizards game! Graphix Unlimited receieved the award for donating over $30,000 worth of printed materials since 2004. The DiMayo Family Foundation received the award for their enormous role in helping Casey Cares grow through personal donations, recruiting new donors, and chairing the Rock N' Roll Bash each September.
After, guests gathered to watch "The Kenzie Story", a heartfelt video that follows the life of 11 year old MacKenzie, who joined our programs in 2006 after she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. There was not a dry eye in the house as the credits rolled, and MacKenzie and her family received a standing ovation as they thanked everyone for supporting the Casey Cares Foundation. To view "The Kenzie Story" video, please click here. A special thank you goes out to Evan Dahne of Northside Video Productions for working tirelessly to put this video together. Click here to watch the five minute video.
Board members Gil Kuta and Mike DiMayo ran the live auction as guests bid generously on sports items, vacations, and children's parties. Everyone was in for a special treat as Doughjangles founder, 12 year old Aaron Ware arrived with a surprise auction item- dessert for a table. Congratulations to both Mike McCabe and Marcus Aiello for winning the Doughjangles cookies-over $2500 was brought in from those two generous donors!!
This year's event brought in over $100,000 for the families served by Casey Cares. The DiMayo Family Foundation was our top sponsor at the Platinum Level and Deutsche Bank, Brandon Home Furnishing, Morrison Management Specialists, and a sponsorship in memory of Georgia Farantos filled the Gold Level. Silver Sponsors included the Sons of the American Legion, MedStar Health, Quaker Funds, and American Bank. Goodman-Gable-Gould/Adjusters, Int'l and Robert W. Baird Company sponsored the event at the bronze level. Long time supporters of Casey Cares, ICCO Cheese Company and Inno-Pak also gave their support to this year's gala.
Media sponsors Mix 106.5, Comcast, Clear Channel Outdoor, VMS, Modern Babies and Children Magazine, Maryland Family Magazine, and Baltimore Magazine promoted the event while R&R Events, Jen Seidel Body Painter, and Atlantic Catering made the evening a night to remember with great food and décor. A special thanks to Graphix Unlimited, Signs by Tomorrow, and Julie Bower Graphic Designer for our printed materials.
It was a wonderful night made possible only with the support of our donors, supporters, Board of Directors, and Casey Cares staff. Save the date for next year, Saturday, March 27th at the Grand Lodge!

Pump It Up Provides Caring Connections
Sunday, March 15, 2009
A big thank you goes out to Pump It Up in Owings Mills and Keith and Kim at Superfresh in Ellicott City for a great Caring Connections Party. The Caring Connection Group Party Program gives critically ill children, their siblings and parents a chance to meet, laugh, and play together during fun group activities. For several hours, sick children are not asked why they are bald or have tubes sticking out of their chests. Parents are able to lean on each other and the Casey Cares staff to gain strength, understanding and (hopefully) some great family time. To see the children laughing, climbing, bouncing and sliding was truly wonderful and is only possible because of our generous donors.

Baltimore Fashion Week picks Casey Cares
Monday, February 2, 2009
"The Casey Cares Foundation is pleased to be named as one of the charity recipients of the second annual Baltimore's Fashion Week, promoting Baltimore's hottest styles and most talented artists. This year's event takes place at the War Memorial Building, located in downtown Baltimore, with runway events during the week of August 10 - 14, 2009.
The City of Baltimore was a sponsor last year with Mayor Sheila Dixon walking the runway, and is hopeful to do so again next year. As long as Olympic medalist Katie Hoff is in town that week, she has committed to model. The attendance for 2008 was over 2,000 guests; next year however, Baltimore's Fashion Week is envisioning more designers, with an attendance anticipated at 5,000 - 7,000 guests for the week - and the list of celebrities, models and designers are just beginning...
The theme of 2009 is "Fairytales" and is opening with an adorable runway event showcasing sleepwear designed for Kami's Jammies, a program of the Casey Cares Foundation. Kami's Jammies provides new sleepwear and themed pajama parties to children on extended hospital stays. Inspired in memory of a Casey Cares child, Kami's Jammies helps children feel more at home in an otherwise sterile environment.

A Day of Tennis for a Special Child
Friday, January 23, 2009
A Day of Tennis for a Special Child(Casey Cares Foundation)Upon hearing that tennis fan TJ was going through a rough patch in his treatment of non-Hodgkins lymphoma at Sinai Children's Hospital, Marc and Gengy of the Tennis Classic rushed in to help. Not only did TJ and his family receive VIP tickets to the PNC Tennis Classic, but he was able to meet tennis stars and get photos behind the scenes with Serena Williams, Elena Dementieva, and Pam Shriver.
"It has always been our mission to have the Charity Tennis Classic help enrich the lives of anyone in our community," commented Pam Shriver. "I know firsthand some of the struggles and uphill battles TJ must fight every day. Being able to provide TJ with a fun and exciting lifetime memory and a way for him to forget about everything else is awesome."

Fenwick Weekend for a Very Deserving Family
Erin's family has not been away together since she was born prematurely two years ago. Erin is a frequent patient at Johns Hopkins Children's Hospital for Sickle Cell and lung disease. Thanks to Teri Hagerty of Crofton, Ledos, Old Pro Golf and the Salisbury Jaycees, Erin and her family received a stay at a private beach house in Fenwick, Delaware with all the trimmings. "We really enjoyed our family time together…," wrote Lashel, Erin's mom. "It was really nice to get away from the many doctors and hospitals that we go to on a monthly basis."
Baltimore for Bryasia
Bryasia, a 13 year old on treatment for a brain tumor at Johns Hopkins Hospital, couldn't leave the city, but wanted to experience the delights Baltimore has to offer. So, Bryasia and her family enjoyed a stay at the Holiday Inn at the Inner Harbor along with tickets to opening night of the Nutcracker and a meet and greet with the cast. This Celebration Vacation was made possible through Lorrie Morris at the Harbor Holiday Inn, Carter Polakoff of the Baltimore School for the Arts Foundation, Linda Port of Medstar, and the Salisbury Jaycees.
Celebration Vacation Donors are the Real Heroes
When Casey Cares families get away from their everyday surroundings they return refreshed and invigorated. By giving our families these mini-vacations they are able to experience quality family time together. We try to accommodate their requests - whether they want to just relax at a beach or choose a weekend away jam packed with activities. Thanks to everyone who made this program possible for our families this year, and we hope we can count on you in 2009!
A big thank you goes out to our donors, Joe Spandolini at the Wyndham Garden Hotel Harrisburg, Patty Sipes at the Tremont Suite Hotel Baltimore, Lorrie Morris of the Holiday Inn Inner Harbor, Marie Harris of Busch Gardens, Lisa Cappiello of Dutch Wonderland, Angela Davis of the Four Points Sheraton, Paula Rinker at the Hilton Garden Inn BWI, The Residence Inn of Lancaster, Embassy Suites Williamsburg, and Crown Plaza Hotel in Williamsburg. Special thanks also goes out to Janet Hannsz, Teri Hagerty, Joann Campbell and Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage

Kevin Gets a Ravens Surprise(Casey Cares Foundation)Kevin is a huge football fan and had been very sick and was not able to do a lot of the things we take for granted everyday. We put the [Ravens] tickets in his stocking and the look on his face when he saw them was priceless. My husband and Kevin really enjoyed the game. Mr. Okun thank you for adding a little extra holiday cheer, it was greatly appreciated."
